Myopia Control

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common vision problem that that may develop at a young age and progress through a child's growing years.

While traditional glasses and contact lenses can correct myopia and allow your child to see clearly, unfortunately they do not help to slow its progression. After decades of research, there are now several effective myopia management options. Typically, the earlier the intervention the better.

What is myopia?

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a common eye condition where objects seen up close are clear, but objects seen farther away are blurry. The point of focus in this type of vision is in front of the retina, the sensory layer of the eye, resulting in blurred vision. This puts the eye under visual stress.

Environmental factors such as less time spent outdoors, closer working distances, prolonged near work, as well as genetics, impact the level of myopia by causing the eyeball to stretch and elongate in an attempt to compensate.

Risk of myopia

Children with myopia are at higher risk for potentially sight-threatening vision problems. Leaving myopia unmanaged could potentially increase the risk of eye diseases and conditions, including:

Cataracts.
Glaucoma.
Retinal detachment.

Myopic maculopathy.

How Myopia Management Works:

Initial consultation

At the initial consultation, our optometrist will establish the optimal myopia treatment and will schedule the necessary follow up appointments to ensure myopia progression is slowing down.

Customized treatment plan

Our clinic uses gold standard advanced equipment to develop a personalized treatment plan for your child. Non-invasive myopia treatments include customized spectacle lenses, specialty soft contact lenses, orthokeratology lenses, and/or prescription eye drops.

Continued care

Once an established treatment has been determined, your child’s prescription has stabilized, and the myopia progression has reduced, your optometrist will continually monitor every 6 months.
